Christian Saydee came off
the bench to secure a point for Pompey, as they ended the campaign with a
1-1 draw against Hull at Fratton Park. He lashed home a fine strike early in the second half to cancel out Matt Crooks’ opener for the relegation threatened visitors. They were able to celebrate at the final whistle, however, as Luton’s defeat meant it was the Hatters who were dumped out of the Championship. A host of Player of the Season awards were doled out before kick-off and most went to Josh Murphy, including The News/Sports Mail prize. There was then the annual period of remembrance for all those members of the Pompey family who have passed away over the past year. John Mousinho made two changes from the side that drew on the road at Sheffield Wednesday last week. Callum Lang and skipper Marlon Pack both returned to the starting line-up, as Andre Dozzell and Isaac Hayden made way. The visitors, unsurprisingly, came out all guns blazing and applied plenty of early pressure on their more disjointed opponents. Ben Killip did well to repel the ball as it bounced around a crowded box, then dived to his right to turn behind Lewie Coyle’s effort. Pompey, meanwhile, were forced into an early change when Harvey Blair limped off after being scythed down by Sean McLoughlin, with Matt Ritchie on to replace him. The Tigers made their early dominance count on 18 minutes, when Gustavo Puerto’s corner was flicked on by João Pedro and Crooks fired home from close range. There was more possession for the hosts from that point, as Hull seemed content to use up as much time as they could get away with. An equaliser might have arrived when Ritchie swung in a free-kick, but Freddie Potts could only send his header into the turf, with the ball bouncing comfortably into the arms of Ivor Pandur. Hull then looked like they were going to double their advantage, only for Conor Shaughnessy to fling himself into the path of a Joe Gelhardt shot. It was the Blues who finished the half on top, although Murphy’s attempt was blocked, while Ritchie fired over at the far post. Half Time: Pompey 0 Hull 1 There was a change from the home side at the break, with Lang making way for Saydee in the forward line. Pompey looked much brighter following the restart and a Potts effort diverted off Saydee before being cleared. And it was the newcomer who deservedly got the hosts back on level terms on 55 minutes, courtesy of a fine finish. Pack's neat pass was dummied by Ritchie and SAYDEE somehow managed to find the net with a fierce drive from the tightest of angles. Hull suddenly looked incredibly nervous, as Pompey set about trying to find another goal that would send their opponents into the bottom three. Regan Poole came on for Shaughnessy, while former Fratton loanee Abu Kamara received a standing ovation as he was replaced for the visitors. A double switch followed on 71 minutes after Pack picked up an injury, with Potts also making way as Hayden and Dozzell entered the fray. The Tigers steadied the ship slightly as the second half progressed and the game began to drift slightly under the south coast sunshine. They almost made sure of their survival when John Egan met a free-kick with a header that was brilliantly kept out by Killip. But Hull were able to celebrate when the final whistle blew, while the Fratton faithful could bask in a successful first campaign back in the Championship. |
