BURNLEY 2   1 PORTSMOUTH

There was late heartache for Pompey, as Burnley fought from behind to secure a Championship victory at Turf Moor.

A positive first half performance was capped by Callum Lang’s close-range finish shortly before the interval.

But Jeremy Sarmiento came off the bench to draw the Clarets level, with Josh Brownhill then scoring their stoppage-time winner.

John Mousinho made two changes from the side beaten on home soil by West Brom the previous week.

Regan Poole was handed a first start for 10 months after recovering from a serious knee injury, while there was a debut for Freddie Potts.

Jordan Williams and Andre Dozzell were the men to make way, with the duo both dropping to the bench.

It was a cagey opening in Lancashire, although the visitors certainly did not look over-awed against their high-flying hosts.

A dangerous delivery from Marlon Pack flew just over the head of Connor Ogilvie, while Josh Murphy fired over the target.

Fans rose from their seats when Christian Saydee’s neat pass sent Lang racing clear, but an offside flag soon doused hopes of an opener.

And a corner from Pack caused more problems for the Clarets, with Ogilvie only able to meet it with a glancing header.

Burnley did improve as the half progressed, although they were not really looking like finding a way through the Blues back-line.

Poole made a couple of key blocks, while Lucas Pires blazed over and Will Norris – facing his former club – was not overly troubled by a low Jaidon Anthony effort.

Pompey showed a more clinical touch as the interval neared, however, taking the lead on 42 minutes.

It started with Potts winning possession in the middle and then finding Paddy Lane, who swapped passes with Murphy.

The Northern Ireland international sent a low delivery towards the back post, where LANG was waiting to fire home from close range.

Half Time: Burnley 0 Pompey 1

The action struggled to get going following the restart, with Burnley frustrated in their efforts to attack Pompey.

There was an opportunity when the ball fell for Luca Koleosho in the box, only for the forward to fire over.

Mousinho freshened things up just past the hour mark, with the tidy Potts making way for Dozzell in the engine room.

But it was a Clarets substitute who entered the fray at the same time who made an immediate impact.

Sarmiento was afforded too much time to move along the edge of the box before bending home a precise finish to level the contest.

For the first time, the Blues were suddenly looking under pressure and it took another fine Poole block to deny Zian Flemming.

Mousinho then made his second switch on 69 minutes, as the experienced Matt Ritchie replaced Lane.

And a triple switch followed after Lang picked up an injury, with Zak Swanson and Saydee also going off for Sammy Silvera, Williams and Harvey Blair.

Burnley were pushing forward, but being left frustrated in their attempts to take the lead, with Pompey looking solid.

And the visitors almost grabbed a late goal when Murphy’s cross was laid back by Ritchie for Silvera to hit a clean shot that was saved by James Trafford.

Instead they were left with nothing as deep into stoppage-time, Brownhill drilled home the Clarets’ winner from the edge of the box.
