With his boss away, assistant private detective Robert West is mistaken for his employer and set upon a case by a beautiful woman - she's being blackmailed with a set of very saucy photographs. A large inheritance is at stake and Bob's keen to do everything he can to catch the culprit; and suitably impress his beguiling client in the process. But for this young dick, the investigation does not run smoothly: there's an eccentric family, a spooky house with concealed passages, a nightclub, a mobster, a spiritual step-daughter, a murder, an American singer and a funeral to contend with.
