Rhe Fratton faithful were
singing in the rain after watching Pompey return to winning ways by
beating Millwall 3-1. They dominated for long periods and a stunning strike from Zak Swanson was added to after the break by Adrian Segečić’s deflected finish. Joe Bryan was dismissed for the visitors, but they still reduced their deficit through Mihailo Ivanović to cause nerves to rise. There was no need to fear, however, as substitute Jordan Williams opened his account for the club with a fine solo effort. John Mousinho made five changes from the side that were narrowly beaten at Hull before the international break. The fit-again pair of Nicolas Schmid and Segečić came straight into the starting line-up, with returns for Swanson, Márk Kosznovszky and Florian Bianchini. Josef Bursik, Conor Chaplin and Williams all dropped to the bench, with Ibane Bowat and Luke Le Roux missing from the squad. And there was a welcome appearance among the substitutes for Callum Lang, who has been missing since August with a hamstring injury. The hosts took a while to get going in the driving rain and chances were at a premium in the opening stages. But Josh Murphy was a threat on the left, with one raid leading to Segečić rolling the ball across the face of goal and the next seeing a cross that Colby Bishop could not quite connect with. And Pompey began to take control once they settled, as Regan Poole released Swanson to hit a shot that was blocked. SWANSON was not to be denied, though, and broke the deadlock on 22 minutes, receiving a pass from Murphy 25 yards out and hitting a ferocious shot that flew into the roof of the net. It might have got even better after Max Crocombe came off his line and failed to collect Schmid’s long ball forward. Because he was right on the edge of his box, however, the keeper was able to keep out the shot from Segečić. There was then a long break in play after Zak Sturge took the ball clean in his face, with the defender having to be stretchered from the field. Millwall’s best spell of the half came after that pause and they had an opportunity to get back on level terms on 40 minutes. Alfie Doughty’s corner was met on the volley by Derek Mazou-Sacko on the edge of the box, but Schmid got down to make the save. Half Time: Pompey 1 Millwall 0 The visitors had a chance to hit back straight after the restart, with Poole doing well to divert Macaulay Langstaff’s effort wide. Instead it was the Blues who were soon celebrating wildly when they doubled their advantage on 51 minutes. Murphy slipped a clever pass through for SEGEČIĆ, who tried to pick out Bishop, only for the ball to flick off Tristan Crama and fly into the net. It might have got even better when Murphy found the Australian again soon after, although his pass for Bishop was cleared. But there was further reason to cheer just past the hour mark, as Lang made his long-awaited return to action in place of Segečić. Pompey were looking comfortable, but Schmid had to get down to turn behind a low Daniel Kelly drive on 65 minutes. Millwall’s hopes of a comeback were soon dealt a huge blow, however, as Bryan went flying in on Lang and was shown a straight red card by referee Michael Salisbury. Williams came on for Swanson and the hosts set about trying to make the most of their numerical advantage. Bianchini could not quite find the target, however, with an angled strike after being found by another excellent Murphy delivery. But it was the Lions who found the target on 72 minutes, as Ivanović steered home a corner from Aidomo Emakhu. Pompey immediately went back on the attack and Josh Knight diverted Terry Devlin’s cross into the arms of Crocombe. Mousinho’s brought on Chaplin and Marlon Pack for Bianchini and Andre Dozzell as the game entered its closing stages. The points could have been wrapped up when Murphy swept the ball across for Lang following a quick break, although the substitute’s first attempt was blocked by Crama and the second saved by Crocombe. But it was another full-back who did finally end any doubts on 89 minutes, as WILLIAMS burst forward from the halfway line, cut inside and hit a fierce effort that left Crocombe with no chance. Murphy might have added another goal, but his deflected delivery from wide on the left landed on the crossbar. It mattered not, though, as Pompey had already done enough to extend the gap to the bottom three to a healthy seven points. |
