Minhyeok Yang scored his second goal of the week as Pompey defeated previously unbeaten Middlesbrough at Fratton Park.

He was teed-up by Jordan Williams midway through the first half to ensure the Blues would enter the international break on a high.

John Mousinho stuck with the same side that drew with Watford on home soil earlier in the week, with Josh Murphy still being kept out by an ankle injury.

Pompey tried to launch plenty of attacks in the opening stages, but they kept on breaking down in the middle of the pitch.

And their opponents were countering with real purpose, yet not forcing Josef Bursik into any meaningful action.

A shot from Aidan Morris flew high over the bar, while Hayden Hackney’s effort met the same fate, albeit with the aid of a deflection.

The Blues settled as the first half progressed, however, and started to cause quite a few problems of their own.

A lovely spell of passing play led to John Swift slipping the ball through for Minhyeok and his cutback found Conor Chaplin, whose low strike was diverted just past the post.

But the hosts did manage to break the deadlock on 23 minutes after Andre Dozzell had overhit a cross into the box.

Williams got to it and fired the ball back into the area, where a first-time MINHYEOK shot was too hot for Sol Brynn to keep out.

Pompey looked to keep building momentum, although a few instances of manhandling on Colby Bishop somehow went unpunished.

And although they were unable to threaten Brynn’s goal once more, Middlesbrough offered little at the other end of the pitch.

Half Time: Pompey 1 Middlesbrough 0

The Blues had conceded straight after the break on Wednesday night, but came close to doing the opposite on this occasion.

Swift laid the ball off for Chaplin, who cut purposefully inside before fizzing a low shot inches past the post.

Middlesbrough soon had an opportunity of their own, as Matt Targett cut back for Sontje Hansen, whose rushed effort flew wide.

Ironic cheers then erupted from the home faithful when referee Anthony Backhouse awarded their side a free-kick following some contentious decisions that had gone against them.

Mousinho freshened things up on 58 minutes, with Swift going off to be replaced in midfield by Márk Kosznovszky.

The visitors were beginning to apply some pressure, although Callum Brittain was unable to force the ball home when it landed to him in a packed box.

A couple more changes followed just past the hour mark, with Terry Devlin and Adrian Segečić on for Williams and Chaplin.

And Mousinho’s final switch on 78 minutes saw goalscorer Minhyeok make way for Harvey Blair out on the left.

The tension began to rise as the game entered its closing stages, although the Blues were still having opportunities to attack.

Targett’s shot for the visitors took a wicked deflection to send it narrowly off target, as Boro pushed for a leveller.

But Pompey did an excellent job of seeing out five minutes of stoppage time to secure a deserved three points.
