The derby day spoils were
shared as Pompey played out a goalless draw with south coast rivals
Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. They were by far the better side before the break and a shot from Andre Dozzell cannoned against the crossbar. The hosts unsurprisingly improved in the second half, but neither team really came close to snatching a winner. John Mousinho made a single change from the side that beat Preston on home soil before the international break. Conor Chaplin came straight into the starting line-up following his deadline day arrival, with Florian Bianchini dropping to the bench. The Frenchman was joined among the substitutes by recent arrival Makenzie Kirk and fit-again skipper Marlon Pack. It was a packed and noisy stadium that greeted the sides as they emerged from the tunnel, each wearing their traditional colours. But if Pompey were feeling over-awed by the occasion, they certainly did not let it show during a dominant display in the first half. They controlled possession and territory, also enjoying more shots, as the home side were not given a chance to settle. A dangerous Josh Murphy corner was well gathered by former Fratton loanee Gavin Bazunu, while a stretching Colby Bishop could not connect cleanly with Chaplin’s pass. The visitors then came close to breaking the deadlock when Murphy’s delivery was only partially cleared and Dozzell hit a clean effort that rattled the crossbar. Shea Charles soon had to throw himself into the path of a Chaplin shot, as the home fans started to make the frustrations clear. But the Blues were dealt a blow on 26 minutes when following Connor Ogilvie was shoved in the back by Tom Fellows. He collided with teammate Nicolas Schmid, who soon had to troop off injured, with Ben Killip on to replace him. They maintained their control, however, and a Murphy cross landed just behind Bishop, who could only hook the ball wide. Southampton had barely managed to enter the final third, but came close to scoring in time added on at the end of the half. A Finn Azaz shot took a big deflection off Cameron Archer, but Killip got down low to his left to make the save. Half Time: Southampton 0 Pompey 0 Pompey made a change at the break, with Ogilvie – still hurt from the earlier collision – replaced by Jordan Williams. It was much more open at the start of the second half and Archer took the ball past Killip, only to immediately pick out a blue-shirted player. The visitors then quickly broke up the pitch, but Adrian Segečić was unable to find a teammate as the danger fizzled. And when Dozzell’s free-kick was sent into the danger zone by Bishop, the ball struck the heel of Zak Swanson and ricocheted clear. Dozzell sent in another set-piece on 65 minutes, although this one was nodded past the post by Regan Poole. Both sides made changes as the second half progressed, with Luke Le Roux and Terry Devlin replacing John Swift and Segečić. Devlin was soon involved in the action, although after finding space to advance, his long-range drive was comfortably gathered by Bazunu. Another substitute was then involved at the other end, with Williams making a key challenge on Fellows inside the box. There was a feeling of tension as the game entered its final stages and Will Still’s complaints about a free-kick going against his side saw the Southampton boss booked. Murphy dragged a shot wide of the post as the game entered stoppage time, but neither side was able to secure the south coast bragging rights. |
