Pompey’s Bramall Lane curse
continued as they fell to a 3-0 Championship defeat against Sheffield
United. They had looked pretty comfortable until Terry Devlin was dismissed for handling the ball on the line late in the first half. Sydie Peck converted the penalty and there was to be no against-the-odds comeback for the 10-man Blues. Instead the Blades made sure of a comfortable victory after the break, as Patrick Bamford and Gustavo Hamer both found the target. John Mousinho unsurprisingly named an unchanged side following the victory over Millwall on home soil at the weekend. There was a slight tweak to the way they lined-up, though, with Josh Murphy moving to the right and Florian Bianchini across to the left. It was a strangely flat atmosphere when the action started, although there was little happening on the pitch to excite the crowd. Andre Brooks hit a shot down into the turf that bounced up and over the bar for the hosts, but that was about it for goalmouth action in a soporific opening. Murphy swung in a dangerous cross at the other end of the pitch a bit later on, with Bianchini heading it off target. The Blades did start to apply some pressure as the first half wore on, although there was still little to test Nicolas Schmid between the sticks. Bamford fired wide from long-range before the first decent opportunity arrived for Sheffield United on 34 minutes. A corner from Sam McCallum was flicked on by Peck towards Jaďro Reidewald at the far post, only for the midfielder to fire the ball straight at Schmid. Just as it looked like the sides would be going in level at the break, though, there was a moment that left Pompey with a mountain to climb. Japhet Tanganga got his head to a corner and his header was cleared off the line by Devlin – only the Northern Ireland international used his arm to do so. Referee Leigh Doughty had a clear view of the incident and pointed straight to the spot before brandishing a red card. Devlin was forced to troop off the field and although Schmid went the right way for the penalty, Peck’s effort arrowed right into the bottom corner. It might have got worse just before the break, but after surging into the box, McCallum could not beat Schmid. Half Time: Sheffield United 1 Pompey 0 With Pompey a defender down, Segečić was the unfortunate attacking player to be sacrificed, with Jordan Williams on in his place. The hosts were looking to make the most of their numerical advantage and Femi Seriki drew a comfortable save from Schmid before delivering a low centre that Josh Knight turned over his own bar. And they doubled their advantage from the resulting corner that was sent into the mixer by McCallum and met by Tanganga. His header smacked against the underside of the crossbar and the ball was scrambled over the line from close range by Bamford. Mousinho made a second switch just past the hour mark, with Colby Bishop replaced in the thankless lone striking role by Makenzie Kirk. The Blades, meanwhile, were patiently looking for more openings and Knight got a vital touch to prevent Callum O’Hare having a free shot at Schmid. Another switch saw Conor Chaplin come on for Murphy, while Márk Kosznovszky then dragged a long-range shot wide in a rare foray forward for the visitors. But they full further behind on 73 minutes, when Hamer received a short pass from O’Hare and curled home a fine 25-yard shot. A final two changes immediately followed, as Kosznovszky and Bianchini made way for Marlon Pack and Minhyeok Yang. It was all fairly sedate as the seconds ticked down, although United might have added a fourth, with Hamer blazing over when the ball fell to his feet inside the box. |
