Pompey conceded twice in the
first half as they suffered a second successive Championship defeat by
going down 2-1 at Ipswich. Jaden Philogene’s fine early strike opened the Suffolk scoring, with former Fratton loanee George Hirst doubling the hosts' lead before the break. It was certainly a much better performance from the Blues than the previous weekend, but Marlon Pack's stoppage-time header was no more than a consolation. John Mousinho made five changes from the side that were beaten by Sheffield Wednesday on home soil seven days earlier. Josef Bursik was handed a debut between the sticks, while there were maiden league starts for Josh Knight, Luke Le Roux, Márk Kosznovszky and Minhyeok Yang. Ben Killip, John Swift and Florian Bianchini all dropped to the bench, with Conor Shaughnessy injured and Conor Chaplin unable to feature against his parent club. It was a fairly even start to proceedings at Portman Road, with Pompey doing some early probing before their opponents enjoyed a spell of possession. But the hosts took the lead on 10 minutes after Philogene received the ball out on the left from Jens Cajuste. The former England under-21 international then cut inside before hitting a fine strike on the edge of the box that clipped the post and nestled in the net. It was a blow for the Blues and they initially struggled to rediscover their rhythm, with another Philogene effort flying over, while Hirst could not connect with a Sam Szmodics delivery. And there was another chance for the Tractor Boys when Szmodics raced away down the right and advanced menacingly inside. But Bursik kept his composure to make a smart close-range save, with the ball then looping up and being caught by the keeper. Pompey were not finding much joy at the other end, although an Adrian Segečić cross was just out of reach for Colby Bishop after Minhyeok’s clever pass had found the Australian. They did have a good opening on 31 minutes, however, as Minhyeok’s delivery to the back post was met by Zak Swanson, but the full-back’s header lacked the power to trouble Palmer. And the South Korean winger was then sent through on goal by Segečić’s pass, only to take too long and allow Palmer the chance to smother the ball. But instead of going in for the break with a positive mindset, the visitors found themselves further behind on 41 minutes. Leif Davis escaped down the left and sent in a teasing low cross that was gratefully turned home from a few yards out by Hirst. Half Time: Ipswich 2 Pompey 0 The hosts were first to threaten following the restart and a Sindre Walle Egeli effort deflected off Connor Ogilvie and looped onto the roof of the net. And when the resulting corner was only cleared as far as Philogene, his fierce strike flew not too far past the post. Kosznovszky soon slipped a neat pass through for Minhyeok at the other end, with Dara O’Shea coming charging across to make a vital block. Mousinho made a double switch just past the hour mark, as Segečić and Le Roux made way for Swift and Pack. Pompey were seeing plenty of the ball in their opponents’ half, but struggling to convert that into clear-cut opportunities. Pack tried his luck with a low volley after Minhyeok’s cross was cleared into his path, with the skipper’s attempt deflected past the post. Makenzie Kirk and Bianchini were brought on to replace Minhyeok and Kosznovszky on 74 minutes, while the hosts also made their five allowed changes. One of Ipswich’s newcomers was Marcelino Nuñez and he sent in a free-kick that was met by O’Shea, with Bursik doing well to tip the ball over the bar. Pack tried to set up a grandstand finale when he won the ball on the halfway line and had an audacious attempt that Palmer was relieved to see dip wide. And PACK did manage to glance home a Swift corner right at the end, but there was not enough time left for the Blues to find a leveller. |
